It took him a lot of effort to get things just the way he liked it. He crafted themes and tried to evoke emotions in five, then seven, then five syllables. He had a lot of fun learning and growing and becoming a better haiku ‘artist’. He loved writing haikus. This was not one of them. Don’t count the syllables. Lucas’s neighbourhood had a wall just for this type of stuff. Where people in the community could come and pin up their amateur art for others to see. Lucas wrote out his latest haiku by hand and posted it on the wall, next to a few of his previous haikus and a beautiful assortment of other homemade art. He sat on nearby bench to take some time to admire the wall. As he did so, a passerby scanned the wall for a few moments and said “that’s dumb”. A few moments later, from another: “that’s cringe”. “I don’t get it”. “Try harder next time”. “Did a baby write this?”. “Pointless scribbles.”. All the while Lucas sat smiling, happy with how his haiku came out, happy with the fun he had writing it. Happy he got to share it. And then, the next passerby said, "I’ve never seen it expressed like this before, that’s very interesting." A smile lit up Lucas’ face at hearing that. It wasn’t the fact that there was 1 in 7 that seemed to find his haiku interesting. It was knowing that the other 6 comments didn’t bring him down. And wouldn’t bring him down.
