Javier Colomina: “Subir al 5% el gasto en Defensa es aún más necesario por Rusia e Irán”

NATO's Special Representative for the Southern Neighborhood, Javier Colomina, closed the Wake Up, Spain! forum with an urgent message on global security. Colomina warned that the Alliance faces its most complex scenario in decades, marked by persistent Russian aggression in Ukraine and the growing threat from Iran. In this context, he defended the need to fulfill the commitment to reach 5% of GDP in defense spending by 2035, as agreed at the Hague summit. The Assistant Secretary General directly pointed to Moscow and Beijing as competitors attempting to reshape the world order, implicitly questioning recent diplomatic overtures that fail to acknowledge this strategic challenge. Colomina explained that investment should not only be directed toward military equipment, but also toward dual-use civilian and military infrastructure, essential to guaranteeing the resilience of the Euro-Atlantic region in the face of the instability prevailing both in the East and in the southern neighborhood. Finally, the intervention highlighted the gap between Spain's international commitments and the government's current plans, which place its spending target at 2.1% compared to the Alliance's requirements.
