JUAN CALVINO: Pastor, intelectual y REFORMADOR francés | BITE
John Calvin was born in 1509 in France. His father planned for his son to become a priest. However, he changed his mind and decided that John should be a lawyer. While studying, John immersed himself in humanism. He learned Greek and read the classics widely. But when Protestantism arrived in France, he was converted almost immediately. In Basel, he wrote the first edition of his greatest work and one of the most influential texts in history: "The Institutes of the Christian Religion." The work was intended as a manual for new converts. In it, he outlined his views on the church, the sacraments, justification, Christian liberty, and political government. After fleeing France to escape persecution, Calvin settled in Geneva. He was banished from the city for a time, but was asked to return to spend the rest of his life establishing a theocratic government there. The system worked so well that when John Knox visited Geneva, he said, "It is the most perfect school of Christ that has existed on earth since the days of the apostles." Towards the end of his life, when he could not walk, he was carried in a chair to preach and eventually preached from his bedroom. He died in 1564. But his influence was not. His influence has been notable in many areas, in figures such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon, as well as in movements such as the Puritans. Presbyterians, Reformed, and many Baptist groups uphold his legacy today in churches around the world.
