Scenes 'n' Soundwaves Top 100 of 1990

These were among my favorite songs of 1990. I had made this list at the end of that year. The first year of the 1990's was a melting pot of sorts. We had a bit of everything: Glam metal was still a force, although was starting a decline. Dance music continues, with acid house joining freestyle; hip-hop still consisted mostly of "fun rap", although in its underground, groups like Public Enemy would be emerging. Modern rock still made inroads, and although synth pop would still be around, more guitar-oriented subgenres like "shoegaze" and "lo fi" were emerging. While 1989 brought "comebacks" from acts earlier in the decade, much of 1990 consisted of band and singers who had success all though the decade. Meanwhile, more "mellow" music was starting to develop, including the debuts of future powerhouses like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. Although these two didn't make my list, Lisa Stanfield had two songs on it. For me, alternative music (still known as "Modern Rock", hinted at in prior years, was realized in 1990 and dominated much of my top 100 list. A reason was that during the summer, I rented a beach house with friends in Belmar, NJ and I listened to WHTG-FM, which had a slogan "real rock radio", and played much of what's considered "alternative". I still listened to some top 40, and a few of the big hits on the Hot 100 are still here. Songs that made the Billboard Hot 100 are indicated with its peak position. If a song didn't make the big chart, the peak for Mainstream Rock, Modern Rock, Dance Club Play or R&B Singles is shown. If a song didn't chart in the U.S., then the peak positions of (1) Canada, (2), U.K., or (3) the highest peak of any other country's major chart. If the song made the top 20 on Billboard's Year-End chart (either 1990 or in a couple cases 1991 as the song came out late in '90 and didn't peak until year the following year), it is indicated as such. If a song made Top 40 New York WHTZ "Z-100"'s top 20 listing of the year, it is also listed. Note that this is not the actual Billboard Year-End chart, but my list, so no doubt many of your favorite songs are missing. Feel free to list your favorites in the comments!
