He ruled from 606 AD to 647 AD. His empire extended from Punjab to northern Orissa and from the Himalayas to the banks of the Narmada River. Harshavardhana belonged to the Pushyabhuti dynasty which was founded by Narvardhana in the early 5th or 6th century AD. It was only under Prabhakar Vardhan (Harshavardhan's father) of King Thaneshwar. Pushyabhuti was a prosperous dynasty and it received the title of Maharajadhiraj. Harshavardhana succeeded to the throne in 606 AD. Harshavardhana belonged to the Pushyabhuti dynasty which was founded by Narvardhana in the early 5th or 6th century AD. It was only under Prabhakar Vardhan (Harshavardhan's father) of King Thaneshwar. Pushyabhuti was a prosperous dynasty and it received the title of Maharajadhiraj. Harshavardhan then succeeded to the throne at the age of 16 in 606 AD when his brother Rajyavardhana was assassinated by Shashank who suppressed the Nikala kings of Goud and Malwa. Harsha was also known as Skalottarpathnath. After ascending the throne, he saved his sister Rajyasri and with an unsuccessful attempt had sided with Shashank. In his second campaign, after Shashank’s death, he had conquered Magadha and Shashank’s empire. He established his capital at Kannauj. With a large army, Harshavardhan extended his empire from the Punjab to northern Orissa and from the Himalayas to the banks of the Narmada River.  He tried to expand his empire even before Narmada but he failed to do so. He had to face defeat at the hands of Pulkesin II, the Chalukya king of Badami.  “Harshacharitra” written by Banbhatta exists as a successful document in the period of Harsh. The works of the Chinese scholar Hwensang, who visited here during the reign of Harsha, also describe in considerable detail India during the period of Harsha and Harsha. With the death of Harshavardhana in 647 AD, his empire came to an end. Important Elements: There were two important figures during the reign of Harshavardhana. a) Banbhatta was a poet in the court of Harsha. He wrote the biography of Harshavardhan 'Harshacharit' in which he mentions with detailed information the major events up to the rise of Harsha's power. It was written in Sanskrit. He also wrote a play called 'Kadambari' b) Hwensang who was a Chinese pilgrim also visited the Kingdom of Joy. After returning to China, he wrote a book called Shi-Yu-Ki (The World of the West). Along with Harshavardhana, Hwensang also praised two other kings in his book—Narasimha Varman of the Pallava dynasty and Pulakesin II of the Chalukya dynasty.
