Cossack Horse Riders on Khortitsa Island, Ukraine
In Zaporisha, the cossacks left their villages to come together on the island of Khortitsa. Only men came to live and train on this island near the Dnieper River. They became mercenaries, fighting for different Russian regimes over many centuries. Now there is a reenactment village in the same place where we watched the horsemen and fighters ply their trades. We also were treated to Cossack Vodka, and traditional food of meat, vegetable and rice.
