In its original logical formulation by Albert Einstein, the theory of special relativity is based on two postulates: The laws of physics are invariant (or identical) in all inertial reference frames (frames of reference moving without acceleration). The speed of light in a vacuum is the same for all observers, regardless of the motion of the light source. Albert Einstein first proposed the theory of special relativity in 1905 in his paper "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies". The incompatibility of Newtonian mechanics with Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism and the lack of experimental evidence to support the hypothesis of a superluminal aether led to the development of special relativity, which correctly describes mechanics at a few fractions of the speed of light (also known as relativistic speeds). Today, special relativity is the theory that best describes the motion of objects at any speed where gravity can be neglected. However, Newtonian mechanics is still used (due to its simplicity and high accuracy) when the motion of objects is quite small compared to the speed of light. It was not until Einstein developed general relativity, to include general reference frames (or accelerated motion) and gravity, that the term "special relativity" was applied. One translation uses the term "limited relativity"; "special" actually means "special case". Special relativity has far-reaching consequences, which have been confirmed experimentally, including length contraction, time dilation, relativistic mass, mass-energy equivalence, universal speed limits, and the relativity of simultaneity.
