How Women Made it to the Ivy League

This Women's History Month, BestColleges editor Lorraine takes a look at how women gained admission to the eight institutions of the Ivy League, many of which had longstanding policies of only admitting men. Women have faced barriers in higher education since -- well, pretty much since the advent of higher education. But it is still surprising that, in America, the prestigious Ivy League schools were some of the last prominent holdouts resisting going co-ed. And wait 'til you hear what some male Ivy League alums said about the prospect of their college admitting women! From Harvard's half measures to Cornell championing co-education almost from its inception, here's the short story of how women got into the Ivy League. Today things look a bit different, of course. More than half of Ivy League students identify as female, and 6 out of 8 Ivy League presidents are women.
