Remove the Brush Caps Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully unscrew the caps counterclockwise. Tip: Keep light pressure on the screwdriver so it doesn't slip and strip the plastic slots. 4. Extract the Old Brushes Once the cap is off, the carbon brush is usually pushed out slightly by a small internal spring.
