Carroll Shelby is one of the most iconic names in the world of fast American cars. Born in East Texas in 1923, Shelby was an accomplished racing driver, piloting Ferraris and Maseratis in competition. But Shelby wondered what a lightweight British car would be like with a powerful, reliable American V8 stuffed in the nose. The 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX 2000, with a 4.3-liter V8 engine under its hood, appeared in 1962. The car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in only 4.2 seconds but remained a one-off. It practically kickstarted the American sports car market, and Shelby went on to create the classic Cobra and decades of hot Fords. Shelby would even take over the struggling Ford racing program, winning the Le Mans with the Ford GT, beating Ferrari, and taking the three top spots. In the '90s, Shelby, well into retirement age, would even develop his own car, the Shelby Series 1.
