western saddle: true saddle measuring
every saddle tree maker, makes their trees different, so the only way to truly fit your saddle to your horse, is to put it on them. knowing how to measure the gullet correctly, as well as the saddle bar, and seat, will make a huge difference, in your pre-purchase arrangements. if you know your horse needs a 7 inch gullet, you wont look to purchase a saddle that was measured incorrectly, as a 7, when it is truly a 6.5... it is sad that most riders have no clue how to measure a saddle correctly, yet tell you, that what they learned from their "trainer" was correct, when it is not. too many people will tell you how to measure a saddle, but if you really want to know, study saddle making, as i have. your chance to fit your horse, will greatly improve if you go to the source of saddle tree makers, for your information. anybody can measure a saddle, but it takes someone trained, and knowledgeable in saddle making, to measure it correctly. hopefully this will help you, as it truly has helped me.
