Yet as Tyrion leaves and Jon continues his training, he doesn’t hear the footsteps behind him as Robb approaches. Robb: Jon, you can’t leave. Jon: What? Robb: I know you intend to head to the Wall and join the Night’s Watch. But you cannot go, not now. Jon freezes. He had not told anyone about that. Had Benjen mentioned something? Then there is Robb’s voice, something about it seems urgent, knowing. He is aware of something happening that Jon doesn’t know about. Jon: Why not? Without a father here, I have no reason to stay. You’ll be Lord of Winterfell, Bran will be your heir, someday Sansa will be queen, and Arya will be married off. But I’ll still be the Bastard of Winterfell. Robb: You know you are more than just that, but I need you now. I need you here, with me. Jon: Begging your pardon, brother. But I want to be more than just Ned Stark’s bastard. And I can’t do that while I’m here. Not when I’m not wanted by your mother and when I’m not trusted. Robb: I do trust you, Jon. Enough to tell you this. I think Father might be in danger. That is enough to give Jon pause. His blade halts mid-swing. He turns to his brother, staring at him. Robb looks both lost and confused, but also strangely aware. There is something more he knows that he isn’t telling anyone. And Jon cannot bring himself to be angry. Jon: The Wall can always be there…I suppose I can help you get settled as Lord first. The two brothers exchange a smile before Robb leaves Jon to his work. A load is lifted off his shoulders as he walks off, for the first time feeling like he isn’t going mad. Since Robb was a boy, he’s found himself having the strangest dreams of himself. He’s seen these visions play out in his life, things like being crowned king, having to fight a war, and dying during a wedding day. Each time he does, he wakes up in a cold sweat, shaking and feeling his body tremble. The most recent of these visions came a fortnight ago when Robb saw his father being named Hand by King Robert. Though he had seen that vision in his youth, it was now a persistent sight for the last few days. Tonight, that declaration was made official as Ned used the feast to make the announcement. While the rest of the hall cheered, Robb felt his blood run cold at the thought of it. Something is going to go terribly wrong. He is now sure of that, and if his father marches south, Robb knows he won’t be coming back. He tried telling his father not to go, but nothing he said could convince him. When he says the court is a nest of vipers or that the Lannisters are not to be trusted, Ned simply smiles and tells him he is aware of that. But at least now he has Jon, and that alone already makes him feel better. His mind is already wandering how else he can prevent his visions, and the bones of an idea begin to form. A few days later, the royal party is preparing to set out for a hunt. Robb is invited to join and accompanies his father and king Robert. Meanwhile, this leaves the girls and his younger siblings alone in the castle. And Jon Snow. With everyone gone, Bran takes this chance to climb the tower. Yet as he scales the old stones, he spots a group of Stark guardsmen accompanied by Jon. They are going towards the old tower where Bran is. For a moment, he thinks they might be searching for him and bringing him down. Yet instead of looking up, they make their way inside and leave the young Stark boy wondering what is going on. Jon still has no idea what he is doing there, but Robb was most insistent that he go to this tower and that there is something going on while they are gone. Behind him, the guardsmen keep their hands on their swords wearily, wondering what this might be about. As they climb the steps, Jon still sees no sign of activity and wonders whether Robb was just mistaken. He’s about to order them back when he hears it. A faint grunt from the room nearby. Their eyes dart around at that. It was no trick of the wind. That was indeed someone. The grunts do not stop and are followed by a little shriek. They follow the sound to the highest room, and one of the guards rams his shoulder against the door. Its old hinges crumble under the weight of the man and cave in. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
