For months we've talked a lot about the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for nearly a fifth of the world's oil and gas, blocked by the trade war waged by Trump and Netanyahu against Iran. Although uncertainty in the region persists, maritime traffic is beginning to recover and oil prices have fallen. However, the costs are not being shared equally. Western oil companies have been the big winners, as they have been able to sell their production at higher prices and have earned more for refining oil into diesel or, especially, kerosene, the fuels that have been most scarce—and, therefore, those that have seen the greatest price increases. Oil-producing countries outside the Gulf have also profited, and not in small amounts, as they have been able to charge more for their products and, in a few cases, have been able to increase their production. The biggest losers have once again been those in the Global South. Around 30% of the world's fertilizer trade passes through Hormuz. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the impact of the Iran-Iraq War, and especially the closure of the Strait of Gibraltar, could push up to 30 million people into poverty.
