3 injured, including 2 critically, after sprint car crashes into infield at Wayne County Speedway

Multiple people suffered serious injuries after a sprint car crashed into the infield during Monday night's Ohio Sprint Speedweek event at Wayne County Speedway in East Union Township. The Apple Creek Volunteer Fire Department tells 3News the car struck three people when it wrecked in the infield during one of the races. Officials say two of the victims were in critical condition, with one of them being airlifted to an area hospital. The third victim suffered minor injuries. Monday's Duffy Smith Memorial marks one of Wayne County Speedway's biggest nights of the year, and serves as the fourth date of the All Star Circuit of Champions' 44th annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek that features multiple races at dirt tracks across the state. According to the ASCoC, racing resumed in Wayne County roughly 20 minutes after the crash. On Tuesday afternoon, Wayne County Speedway posted both a clarification and a statement on its Facebook page. "To clarify, the individuals injured were located in the infield and were not spectators seated in the grandstands or spectator viewing areas," the speedway wrote in response to "reports circulating on social media and in some media coverage that describe Monday night's incident as a sprint car entering the spectator area and striking spectators."
