In this episode of En Defensa Propia, I spoke with Sabrina Murillo, a woman who experienced a tragedy that seemed final, but which became the true beginning of her story. A story of transformation, resilience, and purpose. A few years ago, Sabrina was involved in a terrible accident in which a car fell from the fourth floor of a parking garage in Panama City. Her father, her younger sister, her boyfriend... and herself were in the vehicle. The result was devastating: her family died, and Sabrina was presumed dead. But a miracle happened. A doctor near her noticed she was still breathing, intubated her on the spot, and thus began her long road to recovery. In this conversation, Sabrina shares with moving clarity what it was like to rebuild herself from scratch, not only physically—she was left paraplegic—but also emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. She was in an induced coma, underwent a tracheotomy, underwent multiple surgeries, lost part of her skull, and had to relearn everything: speaking, writing, even eating. But the most striking thing was how she chose not to see herself as a victim, but to become the protagonist of her life. "No one can change your way of thinking; it's your own decision," she told me. And that phrase stuck with me. During the interview, Sabrina talks about grief, survivor's guilt, and how she went from "why me?" to "what for?" She found in the love of her mother, her community, and her faith the tools to begin healing. Despite medical prognoses that predicted she would live in a vegetative state or totally dependent, today she is independent, drives her car, does adapted CrossFit, and has run the Miami Half Marathon four times in a wheelchair. But that's not all. Sabrina also decided to study communications and administration, became certified in logotherapy, and today is a speaker, writer, content creator, and host of the podcast "Así lo vivo yo," where she shares her story and those of others who, like her, have transformed adversity into purpose. This episode is an invitation to stop resisting change, to focus on what you do have, and to recognize the power of serving others. As she says, "gratitude saved me." And that was one of the most powerful lessons from this conversation: when you are grateful for what you have, you stop focusing on what you lack. Thank you, Sabrina, for reminding us of the power of resilience and for living your life in self-defense. ✨ There are moments that change you forever... And this retreat can be one of them.
