Four young Italians, recent computer science graduates, faced with the bleakness of a national job market characterized by low wages and precarious employment, decide to pack their bags and move to Copenhagen. In Denmark, they attempted their first entrepreneurial venture with a startup called Evertale. The project failed in 2013, but the founders showed their astuteness by closing early and reimbursing their investors, saving €40,000 to restart. It was then that they had a brilliant idea: to transform the biggest problem in the Italian labor market into their main competitive advantage. They realized that Italian developers had nothing to envy their Danish colleagues in terms of skills; they were simply underpaid. In 2014, they decided to return to Milan with a disruptive plan: to hire the best Italian tech talent, both those remaining and the so-called "brain drain," offering average salaries exceeding €50,000 per year—unmarketable figures for typical Italian tech companies, but affordable for a startup with good financial standing. They began by providing consulting services to finance the development of their own apps, and in 2016 they launched 30 Day Fitness, leveraging the freemium business model—free basic services and paid premium features. Success was rapid and almost entirely international, with less than 5% of revenue coming from Italy. The company grew rapidly, turning profitable in its first year and creating a work environment considered among the best in Europe for meritocracy and benefits. In 2020, national recognition arrived, when the Italian government entrusted Bending Spoons with the development of Immuni, the app for contact tracing during the pandemic. However, it was precisely at this point that the company decided to shift strategy, shifting from developing new apps to an aggressive strategic acquisition program. Bending Spoons identifies apps and software with an excellent user base but with significant room for technical and commercial improvement. It acquires them and optimizes their profitability. In 2023, they completed a highly symbolic transaction by acquiring Evernote, a historic Silicon Valley app, boosting its profits. This success opened the door to large capital. In 2024, the company's valuation reached $2.5 billion, officially establishing it as a "unicorn," a term used to describe private startups valued at over $1 billion. The acquisition campaign became even more aggressive in 2025, acquiring Silicon Valley giants such as Eventbrite, Vimeo, and AOL for several billion dollars. Bending Spoons closed the year with a stellar revenue of $1.3 billion. By 2026, the company announced its listing on the Nasdaq, the hub of American tech finance, aiming to raise $1.68 billion, with an estimated total valuation of over $18 billion. The four founders will retain approximately 22% of the shares, securing control of what is now one of the world's leading technological companies.
