Экраны на немецких танках: зачем их РЕАЛЬНО вешали
Armored Screens on German Tanks: Why They REALLY Installed Them In the spring of 1943, the Germans began installing thin steel armored screens (Schürzen, or "aprons") en masse on the sides and turrets of Pz.IV tanks, Panther tanks, Tiger tanks, and self-propelled guns. These plates were only 5 mm thick, so they offered little protection against armor-piercing or sub-caliber projectiles. The main reason for the introduction of these screens was to protect against Soviet PTRD and PTRS anti-tank rifles, which could reliably penetrate the thin sides of German vehicles (15–30 mm) from a distance of several hundred meters. In this video, we explore why screens appeared after the beginning of 1943, and especially after the Battle of Kursk; how they worked against antitank rifles and high-explosive fragmentation shells; why they provided additional protection against shaped-charge ammunition (a nice bonus); their shortcomings (cross-country ability, visibility, frequent disruption); and why tank crews often removed these screens. We show photos, tests in Kubinka, and real footage of "aprons" on German tanks. Subscribe if you're interested in tank history and the details of World War II!
