This is the story of the aeroplane no British pilot wanted, the campaign no British newspaper covered, and the men who flew both into a corner of the Second World War that the world chose, afterwards, to forget. May 1944. Southern India. Royal Air Force pilots who had bled for Spitfires stand in silence as wooden crates are opened. Inside is the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt — fourteen thousand pounds of American fighter that one of them describes as somebody having glued a propeller to a milk truck. They laughed at it. Then they flew it. Then they trusted it with their lives, day after day, over a country most of their countrymen could not have found on a map. This is the story of the Forgotten Army, the Thunderbolt squadrons of the Royal Air Force in Burma, and the aeroplanes that were broken up and buried where they stood when the war was over.
