Reviews: Johnny Weissmuller, the former Olympic swimming champion, makes his debut as Tarzan. The film spawned numerous sequels, and Weissmuller went on to play Tarzan in 11 more films over the next 16 years. I had seen this early and rather primitive talkie a couple of years ago and struggled to get through it. I decided to give it another chance and was surprised by how much more I enjoyed it this time. Weissmuller is extraordinary; he's perfect for the part and looks fantastic. His charisma on screen is incredible. Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane truly made the role her own. The African footage, shot during the making of “Trader Horn,” is thrilling and, in the 1930s, must have been worth the price of admission alone. There is some poor-quality back projection, but it doesn’t ruin the film if you don’t notice.
