The history of the Original by Robert brand dates back to 1942. Founded by Robert Levy, David Jaffee, and Irving Landsman as Fashion Craft Jewelry Company NYC, it was renamed Robert Originals, Inc. in 1951. After the Great Depression, women of all ages wanted to look elegant and expensive. Therefore, in the 1940s, a plethora of magnificent jewelry appeared. These pieces were close to high-end jewelry in quality and design, but more affordable. Demand was also fueled by Hollywood movie stars, who wore not only diamonds but also luxurious costume jewelry. Original by Robert emulated the style of the great Miriam Haskell. Handcrafted, their jewelry is unique and expensive. In addition to beaded jewelry, the Art Nouveau line featuring stained glass was very popular. In the 1960s and 1970s, the company produced enamel jewelry with natural motifs—flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Many Hollywood stars adored these pieces and wore them in films. Beautiful, exquisite brooches made of "Russian gold" sparkled under the streetlights, looking impeccable. After Robert's retirement in 1975, his partner's daughter, Helen, took over the company. She renamed it "Ellen Designs for Robert Originals." Although the name retained the name of the founder and chief designer, the jewelry no longer bore a direct connection to the old company, and the quality of the jewelry began to decline. In 1979, she renamed her company "Ellen Designs." The company ceased operations in the 1980s.
