On this show we tell the story of a band’s career and choose 5 defining tracks to represent their journey, showcasing the evolution of their sound along the way. And for this episode we’ve got a band that gained fame as a “soft rock” outfit, although not everyone in the line-up wanted to pursue that direction, some wanted to rock out and when they did they proved they could keep up with the best of ‘em. I’m talking about the California soft rockers, or maybe you prefer mellow masters Bread. And for this episode, we’re pay special attention to the career of lead singer David Gates. So let’s get to it. Born in Oklahoma in December 1940, a young twenty-something David Gates moved to California with his family in 1961. There he wrote songs, worked as a producer, and started to make a name for himself in the music biz. Throughout the 60s David worked with a number of high-profile acts, including Elvis Presley, Brian Wilson, Captain Beefheart, and The Monkees. But it was in the summer of 1968, that things really started coming together for Gates. David was producing an album for songwriters Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin, who went by the name of Pleasure Fair… The three musicians enjoyed working with each other and decided to form a band. And by January 1969, they were picked up by Elektra Records. The name of the band was chosen after a night of driving around LA looking for inspiration. Griffin and Royer pulled up behind a Barbara Ann Bread truck. And a lightbulb went off in Robb Royer’s head. “Bread!” Royer called up Gates who immediately did not like the name. However, at a meeting with Elektra Robb I mentioned the name and the label was all for it. Beginning with a B, it was reminiscent of 60s standard-bearers like the Beatles and the Byrds. Bread also had a kind of universal appeal. So Gates eventually came around.
