El increíble TÚNEL que conectará Europa y África

❓ What would a possible connection between Europe and Africa look like? ✅ A tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar could link Europe and Africa in half an hour and change the logistics of two continents, but its biggest challenge is not just the cost. In the video, we explore why, despite being under discussion since 1869 and gaining political momentum between Spain and Morocco since 1979, the most viable option has ultimately been an underwater tunnel. The nearest point (14 km) is insufficient: there, the sea exceeds 800 m in depth. Therefore, the chosen route seeks the best balance between distance and elevation, between Punta Paloma and Punta Malabata, covering approximately 28 km and with a maximum sea depth of around 300 m. The design includes three tunnels: two single-track railway tunnels and a central service and safety tunnel, as well as vehicle ramps similar to those in the English Channel. The major difference compared to other underwater tunnels is the geology: the area lies on the Azores-Gibraltar fault, the boundary between the Eurasian and African plates, with a history of earthquakes and tsunamis that necessitates a highly sophisticated technical approach. Even so, the promises of connectivity are enormous: Madrid–Tangier in 4 hours and 50 minutes, Barcelona–Marrakech in 9 hours, and projections for 2050 of 12.8 million passengers and 13 million tons of legal freight. Between studies already exceeding €50 million and earlier estimates of around €8 billion for the construction, the project relies on public investment and something equally crucial: the infrastructure that would support it, from the trans-European network reaching Algeciras to the expansion of high-speed rail in Morocco. Ultimately, the question is not only whether the Strait can be tunneled, but what kind of relationship between two worlds would exist on the other side of the tunnel.
