Bitwa o Gdańsk 1945 — jak Polacy wrócili na Westerplatte po 6 latach niemieckiej okupacji
March 1945. Gdańsk is burning, the German defenses are crumbling under the onslaught of the Red Army and Polish soldiers, and the city, which for six years had been brutally occupied by the Third Reich, becomes the site of one of the last major battles on Polish soil. This was not just a fight for the port, streets, and ruins of the old town. For Poles, Gdańsk held a much greater significance. It was here, on Westerplatte, on September 1, 1939, that the shots that symbolized the beginning of World War II were fired. A handful of Polish defenders resisted the German war machine for seven days, forever etching their place in Polish history. Six years later, Polish soldiers returned to Gdańsk, no longer as defenders condemned to a lonely fight, but as part of an army destined to wrest the city from the occupiers. Amid the rubble, smoke, and burning tenement houses, a symbolic return took place—a return to the place where it all began. But victory did not mean the end of suffering. Gdańsk was devastated, the civilian population was in turmoil, and the coming "freedom" would bring Poland a new, difficult reality under Soviet influence. What was the Battle of Gdańsk like in 1945? Why was Westerplatte such an important symbol for Polish soldiers? And was returning to this place after six years of occupation a true victory—or rather the beginning of another chapter in the Polish tragedy? This is the story of a city that became a gateway to war… and a place where, years later, Poles once again saw the white-and-red flag. #BattleOGdansk #Gdańsk1945 #Westerplatte #WorldWarII #PolishHistory #PolishSoldiers #GermanOccupation #Year1945 #HistoricalDocument #History #PolishArmy #PolishHistory
