However, the R5 didn't really offer luxury, other than being able to afford a new car for a reasonable price. Driving enthusiasts could indulge in an Alpine version, or even a Turbo for the more adventurous. But calling the entry-level Renault "chic" was a stretch. Then, in September 1984, everything changed. The Supercinq arrived, and Renault had to redouble its efforts. Why? Because the Peugeot 205 had arrived like a bulldozer, forcing the Régie to rethink its fundamentals. While the GT Turbo took on the 205 GTI head-on with its "just throw in a turbo and see," the GTX and Baccara did something truly daring: they brought a touch of luxury to a category that had previously completely ignored the term.
