The Brotherhood of Consuelo, popularly known as Consuelo del Pelirón after the neighborhood where it was founded and maintains its roots, is a Holy Week brotherhood in Jerez de la Frontera. Its official name is the Pious Brotherhood and Confraternity of Nazarenes of Our Lord of Protection, Mary Most Holy of Consuelo, Saint Angela of the Cross, and Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception of the Cross. It originated from the concerns of a group of young people in the El Pelirón neighborhood in 1985. It was officially established as a Parish Association in 1996 and began its activities at the Parish of Las Viñas. It was erected as a penitential brotherhood in December 2004 and made its first penitential procession to the Jerez Cathedral on Holy Wednesday in 2007. Its canonical seat is the Chapel of Mary Most Holy of Consuelo on Ronda del Pelirón. However, due to its deep connection with the religious institute of the Sisters of the Cross, the brotherhood has temporarily moved the veneration of its patron saints to the chapel of their convent on several occasions while it progresses with its heritage projects and the construction of a new chapel. The brotherhood currently processes with two floats on the evening of Holy Wednesday: Our Lord of Protection: This is an image of Jesus of Nazareth carrying the cross on his shoulder on the way to Calvary. It is a work carved entirely from cedar wood by the Jerez-born sculptor Pedro Ramírez Pazos and blessed in 2003. It is carried on a Baroque-style processional float carved from cedar. Our Lady of Consolation: This is a dressed image of the Virgin Mary, with downcast eyes and a sweet countenance, representing the Stabat Mater (the Virgin at the foot of the cross). It was also carved by Pedro Ramírez Pazos in 1986 and blessed in 1996. It is carried in procession on a distinctive neoclassical-style canopy float, whose poles terminate in a unique, lance-like shape. The habit of the Nazarene brothers is distinctly Franciscan and humble, as it is directly **inspired by the habit of the Sisters of the Cross**. It consists of a cream-colored serge tunic with a train, a hood, sleeves, and a navy blue scapular, complemented by a five-knotted esparto grass belt and black esparto grass sandals. It is a much-loved brotherhood, notable for the contrast between its sober, convent-inspired tunic, the solemnity of its members, and the fervent support of the local community it receives each Holy Wednesday as it returns to the streets of its neighborhood.
