The CDU politician expressed his satisfaction with the summit and continued to speak of a new "spirit of Ankara" and a "new NATO." He meant an alliance in which the Europeans assume more responsibility to keep the Americans on board. "In any case, I am returning to Germany with the secure feeling that we have made a major contribution to keeping NATO together and strengthening it," Merz said. Before the summit, there had been speculation that Trump might not attend at all, might leave early, or might veto the publication of the final declaration, in which the allies pledge mutual support in the event of an attack. This did not happen. However, in several public appearances, he initially did not show his allies the affection he claims to have felt at the end. Spain, in particular, bore the brunt of this. Since the beginning of the Iran-Iraq War, the country has refused the US access to its military bases and is the only member that does not commit to NATO's target of spending five percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defense. "They don't participate, they don't pay," Trump said at his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. "I don't want to trade with them anymore." Rutte contradicts "Daddy" This was a step too far even for Rutte, who is considered the number one Trump sympathizer among Europeans. His attempts to appease Trump are legendary; at the last NATO summit in The Hague, the Secretary General even called Trump "Daddy." In Ankara, however, he unusually contradicted him, even interrupting him. He stated that 5,000 aircraft had taken off from Europe in support of the US offensive against Iran. He was referring to US Air Force launches, particularly from American military bases like Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate. Trump then complained that not all allies had permitted the use of US bases on their territory for attacks against Iran. "5,000 is..." Trump began, only to be interrupted by Rutte: "Huge," said the NATO chief. A different Trump behind closed doors Trump also brought up the issue of Greenland again publicly, reaffirming his claim to the island, which belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark—also a NATO partner. Greenland was not discussed, nor was Spain. His public appearance was "in some contrast" to his internal demeanor.
