Everything Changed When My Hiking Partner Got Hurt
Deep in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, my hiking partner twisted his ankle. There's no easy way out of a place this remote, so after wrapping it, we made the hard decision to split up: I'd continue alone toward Mexico, and Ben would stay behind to rest. Ben wasn't in any immediate danger, he chose to stop and recover before carrying on. But saying goodbye deep in the wild, right after we'd reunited, was one of the hardest moments of the trail so far. This is days 7 and 8 on the Continental Divide Trail. Ben found his way back to camp overnight and we started day 7 together, ice-cold river crossings, the long food carry, the heart of the Bob. Then the injury. Day 8 became a hot, lonely 29-mile push, one of the toughest days of the CDT so far. I've already thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. The CDT is the third and last of the three, and finishing it is the Triple Crown.
