【English】All About Hiraizumi #36 The history of Hiraizumi Chapter 1

Broadcasted on January 27th, 2016 　This year marks the 5th anniversary of registration of Hiraizumi as World Heritage Site. Let’s unravel the history of Hiraizumi this week and over the following 3 weeks. 　When Oshu Fujiwara Clan first lord Kiyohira who established the foundation of prosperous Hiraizumi was born, Tohoku region was in the middle of the war against Imperial Court. 　Kiyohira’s father was killed in Former Nine Years’ war. His wife and children were also killed in the subsequent Latter Three Years’ War. In the midst of despair, Kiyohira survived the wartime and became the lord of Oshu region. To create a peaceful city based on Buddhist principles, he constructed Chuson-ji in Hiraizumi. 　When Kiyohira constructed Chuson-ji, he read Chuson-ji Kuyo Ganmon. In the dedication pledge, he referred to Shoro (Bell tower) and put his intentions. 　　The sound of bell 　　Echoes throughout the world 　　Every suffering will be relieved quickly 　　And comfort given equally to all kinds of creatures 　　In this region 　　Many people’s lives have been lost through wars 　　Numerous lives of animals have been lost 　　Since ancient times 　　Their souls have disappeared, but their bones have decayed and still remain here 　　Every time the sound of bell moves the earth 　　I wish the souls of innocent people are consoled and guided to Pure Land 　 　Hiraizumi Culture which continued over 100 years began with the wish for peace by Kiyohira who survived the war-torn era. His wish has been passed down to second lord Motohira, third lord Hidehira, and fourth lord Yasuhira. Even 900 years later now, it’s still alive in the region.
