Maharani Ahilyabai was the wife of Khanderao, son of the historically famous Subedar Malharrao Holkar. She was born in 1725 and died on August 13, 1795; the date was Bhadrapada Krishna Chaturdashi. Ahilyabai was not the queen of a large kingdom. Her sphere of influence was relatively limited. Yet, what she accomplished is astonishing. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar was the Maratha Holkar queen of the Malwa Empire of India. Ahilyabai was born on May 31, 1725, in Chhundi village, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. Her father, Mankoji Rao Shinde, was the Patil of their village. At that time, women were not allowed to attend school, but Ahilyabai's father taught her to read and write. Ahilyabai's husband, Khanderao Holkar, was martyred in the 1754 Kumbher War. Twelve years later, her father-in-law, Malharrao Holkar, also died. Just a year later, she was crowned Queen of the Malwa Empire. She always strived to protect her kingdom from Muslim invaders. In fact, during wars, she would personally join her army and fight. She appointed Tukoji Rao Holkar as the commander of her army. Queen Ahilyabai also constructed numerous temples in her kingdom, Maheshwar and Indore. She also built numerous dharamshalas for people to stay in, all near major pilgrimage sites such as Dwarka in Gujarat, Kashi Vishwanath, the Ganga Ghats in Varanasi, Ujjain, Nashik, the Vishnupad Temple, and Baijnath. Seeing the temples destroyed by Muslim invaders, she built the Shiva Temple at Somnath, which is still worshipped by Hindus. She was married to Khanderao, son of Maharaja Malhar Rao Holkar, the founder of the Indore state. In 1745, Ahilyabai gave birth to a son, and three years later, a daughter. She named the son Malerao and the daughter Muktabai. She skillfully honored her husband's honor. Within a short time, under the guidance of his great father, Khanderao became a skilled soldier. Malharrao was also a source of satisfaction. He continued to teach his daughter-in-law, Ahilyabai, the art of statecraft. He was deeply pleased with her intelligence and wit. During Malharrao's lifetime, his son Khanderao died in 1754. After Malharrao's death, Rani Ahilyabai assumed the reins of the kingdom. Rani Ahilyabai ruled the kingdom with great efficiency until her death in 1795. She is considered an ideal ruler and is renowned for her generosity and love for her people. She had only one son, Malerao, who died in 1766. In 1767, Ahilyabai appointed Tukoji Holkar as her commander-in-chief. Queen Ahilyabai moved her capital to Maheshwar. There, she built the magnificent and luxurious 18th-century Ahilya Mahal. Built on the banks of the sacred Narmada River, the capital's textile industry became its hallmark. During this period, Maheshwar became a hub of literature, sculpture, music, and art. The Marathi poet Moropant, the poet Anantphandi, and the Sanskrit scholar Khulasi Ram were prominent figures of her era. Ahilyabai is remembered as an intelligent, sharp-minded, and spontaneous ruler. She spoke to her subjects daily and listened to their problems. During her reign (1767-1795), Queen Ahilyabai accomplished many things that people still remember her name for. She enriched her empire. She wisely spent government funds to build numerous forts, rest houses, wells, and roads. She celebrated festivals with people and donated to Hindu temples.
