Is India Quietly Moving Towards a Hindu Rashtra? | Constitution vs Golwalkar
Is India quietly moving towards a Hindu Rashtra? Or are recent developments being misunderstood? In this episode of **What Does This Data Say**, we examine two major controversies that have sparked a nationwide debate about citizenship, the Constitution and the future of the Indian Republic. The first is the controversy surrounding the government's clarification that a passport is not, by itself, conclusive proof of citizenship. If passports, Aadhaar, PAN cards and voter IDs are not sufficient on their own, what ultimately establishes Indian citizenship? Why has this question suddenly become so important? The second is the revision of the CBSE Class 9 Social Science textbook. The new edition gives greater attention to the Emergency while no longer reproducing the text of the Preamble in that chapter and no longer discussing secularism in the main narrative. Does this merely reflect a curriculum change, or does it indicate a broader shift in how India's constitutional identity is being presented to students? To understand these developments, we revisit the writings of *M.S. Golwalkar**, particularly *We, or Our Nationhood Defined (1939), and compare his conception of nationhood with the constitutional vision adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949–50. We examine the historical evidence, the competing ideas of citizenship and nationhood, and what these debates could mean for India's future. This episode is based on historical documents, constitutional principles and publicly available information. It is intended to encourage informed discussion on one of the most important questions facing modern India: *Is the country moving from the constitutional idea of equal citizenship towards a civilisational idea of nationhood?* If you enjoy evidence-based political analysis, constitutional history and fact-driven discussions, subscribe to **What Does This Data Say**, like this video, and share your views respectfully in the comments.
