From the drivers perspective 58.2 Mph at the World Human Powered Vehicle Challenge 2018
One of six attempts to reach 58 mph in a Milan SL velomobile at Battle Mountain, Nevada on a 5 mile road course. After getting taped in and seeing a launch crash before my start and then waiting for the chase vehicle to pass, it's time to go for it! I was backpedaling most of the time while getting taped in and waiting to go. Got some funny reactions out there as it sounded like a motor! :) I had a wet rag to put in my mouth several times as the air is incredibly dry even for a shorter run like this - it was very challenging taking my hands off the tiller even for a second once I was up to 50mph including closing the visor for the last 200 meter push which I forgot to do anyway! Got very scary over 55....... Took a 3 second break at the 3.75 mile mark as recommended by coach Peter Borenstadt without any real loss of speed. Power increased from 180 watts to 230 over the first few miles and then increased quickly to about 420 watts just before and through the 200m trap. What a blast! What a great group of volunteers!
