It was founded in 1992 when Antonio Peña Herrada left Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) to create his own promotion and have greater creative freedom. Since then, AAA has gained a reputation for its flamboyant characters and extreme wrestling styles. In addition to the traditional square ring, the promotion occasionally uses a six-sided ring. AAA, like all other promotions, does not promote a legitimate sporting competition, but rather a theatrical entertainment spectacle with scripted and partially choreographed matches. However, these matches often include moves that put wrestlers at risk of serious injury, or death, if not performed correctly. AAA has had working relationships with other Mexican promotions, as well as several American promotions, including Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), Major League Wrestling (MLW), and All Elite Wrestling (AEW).[1] In Mexico, Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide primarily organizes pay-per-view (PPV) events, but it has also promoted international shows in the United States and Japan. The promotion has previously aired on channels such as Gala TV and TUDN in Mexico, and on broadcasters in various parts of the United States. In April 2025, the American promotion WWE, a subsidiary of TKO Group Holdings, announced its acquisition of AAA in partnership with the Mexican company Fillip; WWE holds a 51% controlling stake.
