Singapore & Lee Kuan Yew fought Tooth & Nail in BATTLE with WESTERN MEDIA | Asians are not STUPID!
Lee Kuan Yew’s battle with the western media started early. Even as a young prime minister, he treated western media with caution and combativeness at the same time. Going forward into the nineteen seventies and the eighties, Lee Kuan Yew’s relationship with the western media remained terse. He explained his position rationally but remained firm that the media in Singapore cannot assume the role of the American media as an invigilator, adversary, and inquisitor. In the nineteen nineties and the two thousands, Lee Kuan Yew mellowed in his treatment of western media but could be acerbic when a journalist made baseless assumptions. In 2009, he even gave advice on how China can better handle western media. In twenty eleven, Lee Kuan Yew said he had to fight the Singapore and international media tooth and nail. He succeeded because he’s like Ronal Reagan. Lee Kuan Yew was determined and he delivered. When asked the question: Precisely because people know the record of the PAP government, do you need to nail every lie to protect your reputation at all cost? Lee Kuan Yew replied: Put that question to the new leaders. I defended my position tooth and nail. I succeeded. I fought against the media in Singapore and internationally. I won because I’ve persuasive powers. I can speak to the people over the blather of the media. In a way, I’m like a local Ronald Reagan. And I deliver. When I say I’ll do something, they know I’m going to do it. #leekuanyew #singapore #westernmedia #internationalmedia #lky #battlewiththemedia #americanmedia Timestamps 00:00 Introduction 00:40 Lee Kuan Yew vs. American Media (NBC) – 1967 02:20 Lee Kuan Yew vs. BBC (1977) – Understanding the Asian Mind 03:35 Lee Kuan Yew meeting Foreign Press (1984) - On his son, Lee Hsien Loong, entering politics 05:50 Lee Kuan Yew vs. Western Media – Third World Perspective (1988) – Press in Singapore cannot be the 4th Estate by being Invigilator, Adversary, and Inquisitor – Asian Values vs. American Values 09:40 Lee Kuan Yew vs. BBC HARDtalk (1991) – On elections, human rights – Don’t misquote me or quote out of context 16:20 Interview with Indian Media – In Conversation (1996) – What is Liberal Opinion? 18:12 Lee Kuan Yew vs. Financial Times (2000) – Asians are not stupid.
