Donald McLean (born October 2, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter. He is best known for his 1971 song "American Pie", which was a number-one US hit for four weeks in 1972 and reached #2 in the UK charts. "Crying" is a song written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson. Orbison had a big hit hit with it when it was released in 1961. In April 1980, McLean's version of "Crying" began picking up airplay on Dutch radio stations and McLean was called to Europe to appear on several important musical TV shows to plug the song and support its release as a single by EMI. McLean also visited the TopPop studios on 21 January 1980. The song achieved number 1 status in the Netherlands first, followed by the UK and then Australia.
