"Overkiln" and "Minifridge" Wood Fired Rocket Kilns. Uncle Mud 2022 Permaculture Technology Jamboree

We've been working up to a wood fired rocket heater based kiln for a few years now at the annual Wheaton Labs Permaculture Technology Jamboree in sunny Montana. Master potter Lisa Orr and her amazing Potter friends really took us over the top this year. Our first iteration this year was an updraft kiln design based on an old burned out electric kiln converted to rocket heater power. It successfully fired a load of pottery in under 2 hours--less than half the time of the electric heater using a small armload of scrap wood. The "Overkiln" is something of a stratification chamber up on top of the Rocket. It takes longer to heat up but fires a much larger load of pottery in side or downdraft fashion. The "Minifridge" is similar to the electric retrofit in that it sits between the rocket burn chamber and riser where it can get hottest. It has a few nice upgrades though: first it is easier to load and unload with its "mini-fridge" side door. second, if you are careful in packing the pottery the entire mini-fridge can be removed and set aside for cooling while production continues with another prepackaged mini-fridge. this cuts several hours off the burn-cool-reload cycle. The Minifridge box also has slots in the door and back for using it as a forge and a crucible is in development. All of these kilns plug into our new super insulated portable rocket heater engine.
