In this opening session of a new series, we explore a striking anthropological study on 30 pre-modern societies which found that even good, just governments collapsed rapidly once the moral and social fabric of their society unraveled — proving that a nation's survival is tied less to its politics and more to its manners and morality. We then turn to Paul Kingsnorth's essay "The West Has Lost Its Virtue," examining how the decline of Christendom left a moral vacuum at the heart of Western civilization — one that politics, capitalism, and "progress" have failed to fill. Drawing on Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue and the story of Polynesian taboos forgotten and lost, we discuss what happens when a civilization severs itself from its sacred roots. From here, we introduce the Islamic concept of adab — its linguistic roots, its technical definition as "the art of doing what is right," and how it differs from akhlaq (character). We explore why the Prophet ﷺ said he was sent only to perfect noble manners, why the early scholars valued adab even above knowledge ("learn his manners before you take his knowledge"), and why an ummah of good character may be Islam's most powerful da'wah to a world searching for meaning.
