Although Trump’s tariffs placed India in a difficult position, they also led to a partial easing of tensions along the Beijing–New Delhi axis. Nevertheless, the most pressing issue between the two remains their 3,500-kilometer border running through the Himalayas. In 1962, China achieved a decisive victory by seizing India’s Aksai Chin region, causing India to lose 43,000 km². Since then, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Sikkim–Doklam corridor have been recurring flashpoints: in 1967, India inflicted heavy losses on China; new crises emerged in 1975 and 1986; in 2017, tensions in Doklam lasted 73 days; and in 2020, bloody clashes broke out in the Galwan Valley. Today, the border remains fragile. Although the difficult terrain limits military mobility, both sides are undertaking massive infrastructure projects. China is expanding its de facto control through a $40 billion railway and hundreds of border villages. India is responding with large-scale tunnels and highways, yet still lags behind China in scope. Ultimately, neither country seeks a direct war, but even a small miscalculation at the border could trigger a major crisis. While economic interdependence serves as a unifying factor, historical claims and security concerns continue to render the relationship fragile.
