Originally developed as the V250 for high-speed services connecting the capitals of the Netherlands and Belgium, the ETR700 had a rocky start. Manufacturing issues led to frequent troubles, halting operations after just three weeks and resulting in its return to Italy, where it found new life with Trenitalia. Now running between the tourist hotspots of Venice and Milan in northern Italy, the ETR700 passes through several scenic locales and key transit hubs. Join us as we take a ride, reviewing onboard amenities and usability. While the ETR700 underwent extensive refurbishment after its return from the Netherlands, not all usability issues were resolved. We'll dive into these problems firsthand and provide an in-depth analysis. The refurbishment was handled by Hitachi, which took over the Italian manufacturer. The train now boasts modern conveniences such as a new Wi-Fi system and USB charging ports, aligning it with the latest standards. What's more, 2022 marked a significant shift for Italy's high-speed and express services. Amidst these changes, the ETR700 was surprisingly promoted to the highest category, the Frecciarossa, despite being a model once plagued with so many defects that it was returned and somewhat undervalued even in its native Italy.
