Following the directive of His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, declaring a nationwide clean-up exercise, I joined the hardworking traders and residents of Nungua Market as they desilted choked drains, cleared debris, and improved environmental sanitation. My team and I were accompanied by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, and Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection. The recent floods were a painful reminder that protecting our environment is a shared responsibility. While Government will continue to invest in flood mitigation measures, we must also ensure that our individual actions continue to safeguard our communities. We know what to do, and we must commit to doing so consistently. The exercise also provided an opportunity to engage with residents and market women on practical ways to improve sanitation. Among the recommendations was the need to intensify nationwide clean-up efforts during the dry season so that drains and waterways are cleared well before the onset of the rains. This proactive approach, supported by traditional leaders, local authorities, and citizens, will help reduce flooding and protect lives and property.
