Why King Crimson Broke Up at Their Peak — Twice

In September 1974, Red was pressed and ready to ship. Robert Fripp had already told the press King Crimson had ceased to exist. That wasn't the first time he'd done it. This film covers both self-destructions — the collapse of the original line-up in 1969, barely a year after one of the most celebrated debuts in rock, and the quiet, deliberate ending of the Red-era band in 1974, while it was arguably playing the best music of its life. What drove those decisions, what happened in the studio during those final sessions, and why the masterpiece they made while falling apart has only grown in stature in the fifty years since. Key figures: Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, John Wetton, Greg Lake, Ian McDonald. Key records: In the Court of the Crimson King, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Red. 0:00 The album released into silence 1:15 Hyde Park and the first collapse (1969) 3:10 The 1972 line-up 5:20 Recording Red 6:50 The second death 8:30 What survived Sources Robert Fripp — Melody Maker, 1974 "King Crimson's Red: The Story Behind the Album" — Louder Sound "Why King Crimson Imploded on Red" — Ultimate Classic Rock elephant-talk.com — Fripp interview archive
