Lochranza Castle - Isle of Arran - Scotland | 4K

Lochranza Castle is a small fortification on the northern tip of the Isle of Arran. It stands on a narrow peninsula next to Lochranza village. Some parts of the castle date back to the 13th century, but most of the tower house was built in the 16th century, when it served mostly as a royal hunting lodge for Scottish kings. It took part in wars against the Lord of the Isles and later changed hands frequently during the turbulent 17th century. In the 18th century, like many other Scottish castles, it fell into disrepair and was abandoned. It is currently under the protection of Historic Scotland. This castle is in quite good shape and, despite its small size, it is still impressive and beautiful. This is mostly thanks to its picturesque location: the white houses of idyllic Lochranza village are surrounded by gentle hills, with the sharper peaks of the Arran mountains in the backdrop. The water around the castle is used as a marina for a number of yachts and sailboats, which definitely adds to its beauty too. It is one of the mandatory stops if you are going around the island. If you follow our channel closely, you will know that Lochranza Castle has been featured here already. This is our second approach to filming it, and this time we did a way better job! Not only because I'm a more experienced drone filmmaker now, but mostly because of the timing. First, we timed our visit for high tide; the low tide in our previous video made the scenery around the headland look a bit untidy and grey. The sea at high tide beautifully reflects the castle and makes for a much better, uniform background. Second, we visited in May compared to our previous late-summer visit. In late spring, the hills around the bay are covered with colourful flowers, giving it a much fresher look and breaking up the grey of the stone walls. Third, and probably most importantly, the conservation work on the castle is now finished! The fence is gone, the entry is open (and free), and with a few safety railings and info plaques installed, we were actually able to film inside this time.
