Göring spent several times in his childhood at the castle and in 1939 inherited it from Epenstein's widow. At the end of World War II he fled to Mauterndorf. Leaving there, he surrendered to the US Army at Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße. Since 1968 the castle has been owned by the State of Salzburg. In 1985 Mauterndorf and was the site of the first-ever FAI World Glider Aerobatic Championships. Mauterndorf (Southern Bavarian: Mautndorf) is a market town of the Tamsweg District in the Austrian state of Salzburg. The municipality also comprises the Katastralgemeinden Faningberg, Neuseß and Steindorf. It is located in the centre of the Salzburg Lungau region, in the valley of the Southern Taurach River, a tributary of the Mur rising at the Radstädter Tauern Pass. In the north, the Niedere Tauern range forms a part of the main chain of the Alps.
