Tsukuba Road is an approximately 4km road connecting Hojo in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, with Tsukubasan Shrine. This road was constructed during the Edo period by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, as a transport route for materials needed to rebuild Chuzenji Temple (now Tsukubasan Shrine) on Mount Tsukuba, which protected Edo Castle from the evil spirits. It subsequently developed as a pilgrimage route. In recent years, with the construction of a motorway leading to Tsukubasan Shrine, the number of pilgrims using Tsukuba Road almost disappeared, but in 1986 it was selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Roads, and it has since become a popular hiking trail. Along the way, you'll find historic townscapes and historic shrines and temples in the surrounding area, allowing you to experience the history and human activities that have continued since ancient times at the foot of Mount Tsukuba.
