Strong and Weak Field Ligands | Coordination Chemistry |
As in the previous video we have seen that in crystal field theory, metals and ligands are considered as positive and negative charges, and when negative ligand approach metal, there is repulsion between d electrons and ligand, and also the extent of repulsion is more in eg orbital as compared to t2g orbitals, because lobes of eg orbitals are directed in the direction of ligands. This splitting of d orbital in two groups in presence of ligands field is called crystal field splitting (CFT). And the extent of splitting of eg and t2g orbitals depends on the ligands, In some ligands splitting is very small and in some cases it is very large because the electrostatic field produced by different ligands are different. Weak Field Ligands 1. Ligands which produce weak field are known as weak field ligands. 2. They cause splitting of d orbitals to a smaller extent 3. In a weak field 10Dq is usually less 4. As energy gap 10Dq is less electrons remain unpaired. 5. As electrons remain unpaired they give rise to high spin complexes. 6. Complexes are mostly paramagnetic in nature. Strong Field Ligands 1. Ligands which produce strong field are known as strong field ligands. 2. They cause splitting of d orbitals to a larger extent 3. In a strong field 10Dq is usually more 4. As energy gap 10Dq is more electrons generally pair up 5. As electrons pair up they give rise to low spin complexes. 6. Complexes are mostly diamagnetic or weakly paramagnetic in nature.
