How can you find out why an engine is consuming oil? Or how can you determine how much oil a car you're buying is burning? Simply remove the spark plug and inspect it. If the valve stem seals (also known as oil scraper caps) are leaking, the threaded portion will be soaked in oil. If part of the insulator and the skirt with the mating electrode are covered in soot, the piston oil scraper rings are the culprit.
