Bakhtar Sai (Jagirdar of Basudev Kona) and Mundal Singh (Parganat of Pahar Panri) were prominent freedom fighters from Gumla, Jharkhand, who valiantly revolted against the British East India Company in 1812. They led a tribal uprising against the exploitative and heavy taxes imposed by the British and the local Maharaja. When a tax collector named Hira Ram entered their territory, Bakhtar Sai beheaded him and sent his head to the Maharaja of Chotanagpur. This prompted a massive British retaliation led by Lieutenant H.O. Donnell. Mundal Singh arrived at Navagarh to assist Bakhtar Sai, and together they fought the British forces for three days, using local caves as strategic bases.
