The number of Indigenous kids in out of home care is at an all-time high | 7.30

Just 6 per cent of Australian kids are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, yet they make up almost half of all children in out-of-home care. Under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, federal, state and territory governments along with peak bodies have all committed to halving the rate of First Nations children in out-of-home care by 2031. Yet despite more than 60 inquiries putting forward solutions to reform the child protection system, the rate of over-representation is the worst it has ever been. The family has been assessed as high-risk by the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), due to concerns about substance abuse, gambling, family conflict and school attendance.
