Poison Ivy 101 | Prevention, Treatment & Common Myths

Poison ivy is common in the US and can cause an intense itchy, swollen rash in sensitive individuals. Learn to identify it: three leaves with a red stem. Try to avoid contact. It spreads through an oil (urushiol), not from person to person. It can, however, transfer from pets or contaminated clothing. Wash clothes in hot water with soap and shower immediately after exposure to remove the oil before it triggers a reaction. Avoid scratching—it can worsen inflammation and lead to infection. Treatment options include vinegar soaks (6:1 water to vinegar), calamine lotion, oatmeal baths, and anti-itch or anti-inflammatory creams. Severe cases may benefit from prescription therapies. Seek medical care if the rash covers more than ~25% of the body, is severe, or involves inhalation exposure from burning plants (urgent). Early identification and quick washing are the most effective prevention steps!
