On January 7th, 2025, the Eaton Fire destroyed it along with 8,000 other structures. At 88 years old, Sandra discovered tiny homes online, found Clever Tiny Homes, and moved back to her original lot by December 1st. Full tour inside. Sandra lost her husband in 2023. Then the Eaton Fire swept through Altadena, California, and took everything. Sandra evacuated with her cat Lena, her medicines, and her purse. It took months for the loss to sink in. Sandra did not visit the property for six months. When Sandra decided to rebuild, she found Clever Tiny Homes. Her delivery was scheduled for January 2026, but a retired firefighter volunteered to swap dates so Sandra could get home sooner. On December 1st, Sandra moved back to her original lot. LIVING ROOM Custom couch seats six with an extra chair and two stools for committee meetings. Basket coffee table with custom glass top. Buffet with drawers doubles as entertainment center. OFFICE Full workspace with computer, radio, two printers, and file storage. Sandra did not think an office was possible in a tiny home. KITCHEN Six storage drawers in the island. Built-in microwave, cooktop, full dishwasher. Refrigerator with freezer. Cat tree secured to the ceiling. Terrariums on the counter with natural light. Sandra's caregiver makes breakfast daily and Sandra receives Meals on Wheels as a fire victim. BATHROOM (SPLIT DESIGN) Split across the hallway with pocket doors for privacy. Side one: large sink, medicine cabinet, safety adaptations, museum art posters including a Picasso, jewelry organizer with dual mirror. Side two: tub shower combo with padded cushion and slip-proof mat. Special tile epoxy resists mold and flexes so tile never cracks. Step ladder with safety rails for higher shelves. BEDROOM (THE COCOON) Four-poster bed on risers for under-bed storage. Dresser, shelving, floor mirror. Washer and dryer. Everything put away, surrounded by beauty. SITE AND SETUP Placed on Sandra's original lot. Temporary housing permit (fast approval). Temporary power pole. Hooked up to existing septic. About 6 weeks from permits to ready. No crane needed because neighboring lots were empty. COST AND UTILITIES Extra solar package (capable of off-grid). Utilities significantly lower. Sandra sees tiny homes as a real solution for seniors on fixed incomes who do not want a large mortgage. SOUNDPROOFING Construction on three sides. Inside, Sandra hears nothing. SANDRA'S BEST ADVICE "Content. It's easy. Everything is at my fingertips. I don't have to stress. If I want to make a cup of tea, it's steps away. I never really had that before." Sandra's husband's ashes were recovered from the site by volunteers with sniffer dogs and interred at Mountain View. Neighbors are rebuilding. Most will be back by year end. The community is coming back and Sandra will have the same neighbors she has had for 50 years.
