Quanzhou is a city teeming with deities. Buddhist temples, Mazu, Guan Yu, mosques, and Manichaean Buddhas have all left their mark on this city. But the question remains: with so many deities, why can't they hold onto a single generation? At the foot of Jiuri Mountain, a Minnan man, after worshipping Mazu, Guanyin, and the Tongyuan King, still had to board the boat himself once the incense burned out. The gods could comfort him, but they couldn't provide him with a meal at his doorstep. In this episode, we won't portray Quanzhou as merely scenery, nor will we present its faith as a spectacle.
